What is the gell-like substance in thawed blood plasma samples and is there any way to prevent it?

This quality doesn't seem particular to an individual species (I've seen it in both monkey and rat plasma samples).  After freezing aliquotted plasma to -70C, it's thawed on ice before pipetted...
