What size grinding paper shall I use for surface preparation of SS316 or A6061 before nanometer thick graphite coating on it?

I wish to know if surface roughness makes much difference. The method of coating I plan to use is "sputtering" I would appreciate comments on coating thickness as well (still with sputtering).

What is the best procedure for cleaning or de-greasing the surface of 316 SS prior to graphite sputtering?

My thin films of graphite sputtered on 316 SS delaminate. I wonder if it has to do with surface cleaning, surface finishing or what. I would appreciate some feed back on this issue.
