Function/role of Sod-Acetate in the synthesis of Nanoparticles(mostly iron Npr.)?

Function/role of Sod-Acetate in the synthesis of Nanoparticles like Fe2O3.? Only it control the pH or also act as binder of some other fucntional group with the Magnet (Fe2O3 orFe3O4)?
