How can one generate those envelopes (maxima & minima) in transmission spectrum when doing UV-Vis scanning?

I observe the presence of envelopes in some articles for the UV-vis transmission spectrum, which enables one to calculate film thickness and other optical constants. How is this envelope achieved...
