Is it possible to use SIFT(Scale-invariant feature transform) and HOG(Histogram of oriented gradients) in handwritten text recognition?

Recently i have searched for algorithms for text recognition from an image particularly handwritten text. Then i saw SIFT and HOG. And i am wondering if they can be used for handwritten text...
