Subsampling a large fish population for aging - long-lived fish and many large individuals, little money - any thoughts?

I need to determine the age structure of a fish species that is long-lived (>60 yrs Max age) and the size frequency histogram is very skewed to the larger (up to 1300 mm long)(presumably older)...
