I know the unpublished info from a colleague in the lab. I've found one published paper in which the process I'm talking about is suggested, so I have added it as a reference.
Would you include only the published info as a reference? Or would you add the reference to the unpublished data, too?

I suppose references are for published or unpublished researches or records of information and data sources.
Yes personal communication are often given in researches either in footnotes or simply in notes by names and affiliations and content of communication. May be I sound more conservative.
I think that if your colleague is the author of that published paper you have found, it is OK to refer only to the published paper. If not, i would put something in the reference to indicate my colleague's contribution.
Yes, if you find a published reference, you should include only the published reference. If you can't find the published reference then you have to put your personal communication with your colleague as the reference. I suppose you should not have too many personal communications as references..that may look very odd..
If you gained some important insights into the research from the personal communication that couldn't be gained from the paper then I would say it's appropriate to reference the personal communication.
It is unusual, but yes, you can. Just make it very clear what you do, potentially [and with the agreement of the person you communicated with], add it as an appendix.
