Flooding and associated loss of life and property has become a norm with several catastrophes in the recent years. I am interested in understanding how scientists and researchers can contribute towards preventive solutions. What sort of research can one pursue to gain skillset that enables better understanding of flooding patterns? Additionally, until we have "concrete" solutions, what can be done to alleviate the severity of the events?
Since flooding is affected by earth system components and their nonlinear interactions, we can understand its pattern to some extent in the earth system science framework. But diverse human activies give rise to additional disturbances in the system at various scales and this makes our understanding more difficult and uncertain. Our efforts to prevent it include forestation and eco-friendly construction, and need multidisciplinary approaches using both natural sciences and cultural sciences.
