The IoT already does work over the internet. If you use smart objects at how, for example, they will be connected to your home router. This allows users, manufacturers and many others to use them to suit their purposes. They communicate over the internet, both sending and receiving potentially vast amounts of data. The smart object uses this data autonomously to carry out whatever function it is designed to do, without the need for human intervention, other than initial setup, and perhaps maintenance by the manufacturer or their agents. This mass of data can, of course, be mined for a variety of purposes. You may have heard that there can also be considerable issues with security and privacy, and this is an area that will need considerable effort to ensure these challenges can be properly met.

Setting up a dedicated global wide area network would be a very expensive thing to do, although it may be that this might be one way to address security and privacy. However, the internet is already here now, so I don't see that changing any time soon.

The computing element of smart objects tends to be very small in comparison to say a desktop PC, or a laptop, which can make it harder to sucure properly.

IOT(Internet of Thing) consists of  all the web-enabled devices that collect, send and act on data they acquire from their surrounding environments using embedded sensors, processors, and communication hardware.

These devices,  called "connected" or "smart" devices, can sometimes talk to other related devices, a process called machine-to-machine (M2M) communication, and act on the information they get from one another.

Connected devices also generate massive amounts of Internet traffic, including loads of data that can be used to make the devices useful.All this new data and the Internet-accessible nature of the devices raises both privacy and security concerns.

It really depends to what scale IoT system is being implemented. However, the word "Internet" in IoT does not usually imply that the only connection method is having internet.

yes it will be depend on infrastructure like internet future is wireless and cognitive , sensors and agents , xG technology , software define, ipv6 , smartness and Intelligent etc then smart house , smart city , smart country, and smart world each of these need platform to Communicate and sharing information(knowledge) and standards each other form component on earth or under water or in space and Interplanetary or from each of them will be embedded in everyday objects (cars, domestic appliances , human , etc) . with possibly hundreds of billions of new devices that will collect information and will have to be upgraded and managed remotely and conveniently so all of M2M will be under Umbrella internet of thing and everything (The internet) a mix of LAN ,WAN ,MAN ,PAN WLAN, SAN, EPN , VPN ...etc

well its depend on  infrastructure  , some application may need connection to internet specially mentoring over large distance , while other application dont need . new days Lora and Sigfox contributed significant possibility
