The question arises from the growing influence of artificial intelligence in various fields, including academia. As AI technologies continue to advance, there is a debate about whether they will eventually replace traditional academic contributions or serve as valuable tools to supplement and enhance the work of the academic community. Additionally, it prompts consideration of whether AI has always played a role in academic research and writing, albeit to a lesser extent, before the recent surge in AI capabilities.
AI is a tool humans use, so it will be used as humans choose to use it. What matters are the decisions humans make. Fobbing human decisions on AI, when it's humans that take the rewards, is just that, a copout. What matters isn't, only, who pays the price, but, also, who gets the credit. It's wrong to focus on AI, when it's the decisions of humans that only matter.
AI has already been used in writing with Google, Word Auto correct, and grammar, spell check, and other tools. The new type of generative AI like chatGPT is yet another AI tool we need to learn to use responsibly and ethically, and teach our students proper techniques so they do not fall into the blind reliance trap.
What I teach students is that AI cannot replace good analysis, problem solving skills, and decision making. It also cannot replace the type of creativity that comes from the human experience. Thus far, AI cannot identify a problem to solve without human input.
AI works to enhance the academic community's writing by assisting and offering a wide range of services such as "Grammarly" which is an AI-powered writing assistant that helps with grammar and spelling and "Quillbot" which is a paraphrasing tool. Nonetheless, it is notable that the role AI plays is merely supportive as it can't completely replace the human element of creativity, critical thinking, and contextual understanding. Moreover, complete reliance on AI is highly unlikely due to trust-related concerns, including issues surrounding bias and ethics.
