I have taken UV spectrum for acid treated clay and observed an absorption band (shoulder band) at 342 nm. Can anybody help me in finding the reason?

I am not a big specialist in UV spectres, but work a lot with clay.
You should to answer:
1. To which group, bond relate the absorption at the 342 nm
2. What type of clay you used?
3. What kind of acid and concentration?
As clay contain -OH groups and have big absorption ability, treated with acid (what kind of? [R-H]) you may:
a) to modify it to "Clay--OR"
b) you "catch" spectra of your acid
c) destroy original clay structure.

Thanks. I have used white montmorillonite from Japan. I have treated (at 90 deg. cel.) the clay with sulphuric acid (0.7 ml/g of clay in 20 ml of water) for 4 hours. Further, I have treated the clay at different time intervals i.e.,for 8,12 and 16 hours.
I found the shoulder band at 342 nm for raw clay and 4 hours treated clay. In other samples it disappeared.
I assume that it may be due to some impurity. Please help me.
maybe something like humic acids?
Maybe for cleaning you first wash with about 1 % polyphosphate followed by water.
About impurities (organic), you can easily check for it: just by heat treatment buy 600-800C in air atmosphere during 1 h. Definitely it burned out, but remember, that this way you damage clay structure and this method can't be used as purification method.
