Most students prefer to do physics and chemistry and avoid biology at teacher training level for secondary schools especially in Malawi, any reasons for this?
This is a common problem spreading across the world. We have similar problem in India. Most of students prefer going for physics, chemistry, commerce, economics and mathematics. Obvious reason is job opportunities. With this trend, we might find it difficult to have dynamic doctors and dynamic biology scientists in future. This is a serious issue that politicians/policy-makers must address and create good job opportunities in biological sciences.
@Catherine, here in Malaysia, we have about 30% who do not choose to study Biology. Most are boys and the reason is that they don't wish to spend so much time preparing before lectures and to organize their notes after classes. Some complain that Biology is such a wordy subject and it's taught in English from pre-university level. Being a Biology teacher, I do research using music mnemonics to facilitate their learning.
But about 70% are happy enough to study Biology, because they are interested in health related careers. Competition to public universities is quite stiff, especially for medicine, dentistry and pharmacy. Thanks for the question.
