It's a reference to the split of the Roman Empire in two administrative regions : the pars occidentalis and pars orientalis. pars mean part. The Western civilization is called la civilisation occidentale or l'Occident in French, so it's closer to the latin word..

Western Civilization is important to study because it has a lot of significant events that played an important role to how our world is shaped today. From the start of agriculture, development of tools (from stone to copper to iron), development of writing/language, development of different cultures and religions.

Thanks for the clarification. Actually, I only mentioned "western civilization/culture" because it is the one I am currently familiar with. I use as well the reference to "worldview". No doubt, as you have indicated, "western culture" is "important". And so are other cultures. However, I fail to detect in your post a direct link to my question (why are we focused on the here and now?). Am I missing something???? I will be more than willing to answer questions.
