We use 10-0 poly propylene suture (also known as Alcon pair pair pack) for suturing Cionni ring or transscleral fixation of intraocular lens in cases with inadequate capsule support. But there are a few studies showing degradation of 10-0 poly propylene suture. Do you have any experience regarding use of other suture like 9-0 prolene or 8-0 Gortex sutures?
9-0 prolene is used more commonly now. But gortex sutures are going to stay for the long run. As of now there is no major study to compare these sutures in a long term study about its efficacy, complications and ease of surgery. It will be nice to have comments from other researchers
I agree with you Dr Jaidrath Kumar that trend is changing and more and more surgeons are using Gortex sutures for Transcleral fixation of IOL as well as fixation of Cionni Ring. Long-term follow-up of secondary IOL fixated with 10-0 prolene suture may show degradation and suture breakage leading to dislocation of IOL.
Since 20 years we use 10-0 prolene for transskleral IOL fixation and we can not report a single IOL dislocation due to suture break. Today we are implanting more often Verisyse. Prolene 9-0 or 8-0 produce to large knots in my opinion.
