Which software can I use for controlling the parameters and communicating with the VFD drive?

I am wanting to control the parameters of a VFD (variable frequency drive) using a computer. I am confused about some questions.

1) Which software should I use for this? Should I use Matlab or any other software?

2) How do I get the data out of the pins of computer for sending that data to VFD?. (Interfacing software with the hardware of computer).
