Dear Jaoua Emna,

The soft ware defined radio kit can be used as universal spectrum sensing device.

There are many applications in the literature to use USRP in spectrum sensing based on energy detection method and cyclostationary detector. It contains three basic parts: the rf front end containing the antennas filters and LNA, Then an A/D converter, an fpga for down conversion and the base processing is performed in the PC or Lap Top.

For energy detection you need only to take the signal from the output of the A/D converter and input it to the computer for signal processing in the computer using eg matlab .with its DSP tool it including the fast fourier transform for the spectrum sensing.

As open source software kit you can find the spectrum sensing software published.

I used the USRP 2 to implement an enegy detector with LabView software. see http://www.ict-cogeu.eu/deliverables.html in deliverables also you can register in the [Software Defined Radio] forum in NI.com and find out more solutions.

Thank you for your answers.Actually I was confused between buying a universal platform that give me the ability to implement many features not only the spectrum sensing algorithm or a cheap one to juste implement the specturm sensing algorithm.

Hi, we used a USRP and Gnu Radio to implement spectrum detection by energy and ciclostationary methods. I believe it is the best combination for begin to work with software defined radio, since it is generic and you can implement energy detection and other radios do you like. However, if you just need to implement spectrum detection, you can buy a Dongle SDR and working with GNU Radio you can do it. Please visit gnuradio.org and you will find more details.

Hi if you are looking for a simple sdr hardware platform, i would suggest you to go with DVB-T dongles which are available for less than $15 USD. These can work pretty well for simple algorithms like energy detection, and analysis can be done using GNU radio.

You can use either of the two SDR platforms. If you intend to perform spectrum sensing at higher frequencies and higher sampling rates, then USRP B200 shall be optimal. Whereas RTL-SDR is cheaper than USRP B200. Recently, RTL-SDR has been tried for successful multi-channel operation.
