Since 2015, I have been working in resources optimization in cloud environment by using CloudSim. I have tried 3 simulator including CloudSim but for me CloudSim is a best choice. If you take my suggestion, just pick up any one and stick while to understand it.

CloudSim is for sure the most well known cloud simulation framework. There is a lot of forks of it, each one targeting specific features such as SDN, scientific workflows, edge computing, etc.

Despite CloudSim is intended to be a general purpose framework, the project has been abandoned for more than 2 years. The number of issues just increases and even the minimal pull requests aren't accepted.

CloudSim Plus is currently a state-of-the-art general-purpose cloud simulation framework. It's actively maintained and has a growing community. We have almost 30 long-waited and advanced exclusive features, including joint power- and network-aware simulations, vertical and horizontal VM scaling, Host fault injection, AWS VM templates, dynamic creation of Cloudlets and VMs, SLA Contracts and processing of Google Cluster Data traces.

If you just take a look at http://cloudsimplus.org you'll see the quality of our project. The code was almost entirely refactored to make it clear, remove code duplication and make the framework highly modular and easy to extend.

It's also way easier to use, as you can see at the example provided in the link above. The documentation was totally updated and extended. Finally, there is a large number of issues fixed. Our main paper shows some of these issues (check the publications section).

You may wish to explore the tool "CloudAnalyst", an extended version of CloudSim. It is publically available and comes with a good GUI (also provides source code for all its modules - including load balancing and scheduling).
