There are circumstances when acting upon expert judgement is desirable; for example:

1. In an emergency situation where a quick decision is vital.

2. Where an innovation is being made that has not previously been proven.

However, there are other circumstances where it is better to only act upon proven knowledge; such as:

1. When making the wrong decision could be disastrous, and time is on your side.

2. Where an innovation would only work if based on scientific principals.

What are your experiences?  When to act on judgement and when to act on knowledge?
