I'm wondering what would be the best approach to create the watershed of a lake. I see two solutions here:
- Creating the watersheds of all tributaries of the lake and aggregate them, which only works if the watershed is connected to the rest of the hydrographic network.
- Using the outlet of the lake and compute the watershed from there after burning the lake, but still is the problem for lakes that are disconnected and therefore don't have an outlet.
Anyhow, I'm asking for advice or a method to create lake watersheds.

Mátyás Gede , I should have been more accurate while asking my question, but the use of GIS is implied. And that's where is the problem: I couldn't find a GIS method specifically made for lake watershed mapping, as most tools deal with are primarily made for linear networks. That's why I'm asking if someone knows what would be the best way of using GIS tools (ArcGIS in my case) to create the watershed of a lake.
François-Nicolas Robinne , there may be two cases:
- If the lake has no outlet, then calculate watershed for the deepest point of the lake bed.
- Otherwise, calculate watershed of the outlet point (assuming that there is only one outlet). In this case the lake bed depth may ruin the calculation (there are lower points compared to the outlet), so use a DEM where that is containing the lake surface not the lake bed.
Thinking again, even having more than one outlets should not affect this second case.
But I might be wrong, it is Monday morning... :)
