I am working on sintering of metallic materials. If we use alloy powders formed by gas atomization, what kind of microstructure can we expect. In particular, what will be the distribution of intermetallic phases? Will that be even in every particle?
It is hard to say what microstructure the powder has, because the dimension of the powders is around several micrometers (in general), whereas the grain size is also of the similar dimension. The phases strongly depends on the the alloy syestem as well as composition, cooling rate during the atomization process etc. In addition to intermetallic phase, some "special" phases like quasi-crystalline phase and amorphous phase can also appear.
