I have some coarse textured sediment sample. I want to go for sub-micron size fractionation by filtering them with filter paper (>micron sized). So what type of filter paper is useful (e.g. cellulose membrane, glass fiber etc.)
I have only experience with filtration of suspensions thus fine-grained sediments (clay and silt sized).
Our aim is to determine suspended sediment concentration by using pre-weighed glass fiber filters (Whatman GF/C). After filtration of a certain volume the filters are dried and weighed to obtain the suspended sediment concentration. I am not sure if you are looking for similar application.
The operational definition of particulates is usually >0.45 microns and celluose membrane filters are commonly used. For practical purposes it depends on your purpose and what you are investigating. There is nothing magical about 0.45 microns.
