What type of experimental research is being carried out in Industry 4.0 domain? What I found that most of the work is theoretical and proposes the various frameworks from bigdata, automation, machine learning, IoT areas.
Industry 4.0 is a current trend with 8 years at least, proposed by Germany government. For that reason, currently publications are based on frameworks, architectures, application as an proposals, to ensure a new or compatible standards with trending concepts like IoT, CPS, Cloud computing, Cloud robotics, IoRT, FoG and so on. In this way, there are many research institution building and testing own proposals based on Industry 4.0 concepts. In consequence, it is very important "use" currently developments as you mentioned (frameworks from bigdata, automation, machine learning, IoT areas), aiming to have standard, robust and scalable solutions for industrial and academics applications.

You can do a review of this book with Industry 4.0 concepts:
Industry 4.0 is multidisciplinary, involves a variety of study tools. Therefore, individual studies are important to the whole. On the other hand, the industry already exists in practice, the study tools are improvements, concepts, and new models.
I agree with all the answers, therefore I can add a curious side effect of this research domain in my country, as many others had in the past!
In Italy Industry 4.0 is also a great business for the majority of the industries, little and bigger, because everything is going on masked with this label in order to exploits finatial advantages. So, many work done marked with this label here doesn't mean they are really following a real effort in the sense of the above definitions (frameworks from bigdata, automation, machine learning, IoT areas, ... and remote controls).
I agree that a lot of research is carried out on a theoretic and very abstract level. However, for the introduction of Industry 4.0 it is essential, that experimental research supports the transfer from research to industry.
At the Free University of Bolzano we work on Industry 4.0 using a very practice oriented approach in our learning factory laboratory named "Smart Mini Factory". In the future interested people can have a look on our work, equipment and research projects under www.smartminifactory.it
Dear colleague, our team researches the area of demand-driven supplier collaboration and Industry 4.0. Our latest paper reports on factors that currently impede formation of such partnerships in the European aerospace supplier cluster, and working on potential solutions for these challenges: collaborative ontologies, enforcement of governance rules and instant operationalisation of goals to workflows.
