The contractor didn't put one at the wall & foundation interfaceIts under-pinning. I would like to know how many blocks just above the floor slab I could remove as I put a damp proof coarse(DPC) into place without compromising the strength of the structure?
Damp Proof Course is intended to prevent moisture flow up the walls. Preferably, It should be below the flooring level. (Plinth level). DPC has nothing to do with strength of structure.
I know where the DPC should go, but in this case the structure is already existing though the dpc was never placed. I need to know the linear length of blocks i can remove as i place the dpc.
This is basicaly like underpinning foundation wall, so you can do 3 feet at a time. However, if the wall is long you can demolish 3 feet and leave 6 feet in a repeatitive manner. and do all the demolished areas at once. Then repeat the whole thing for next 3 feet and so on.
Thanks Reza and Dinesh, since the issue of underpinning is on a high cost, decided to go in with use of bitumen on the sides of the covered foundation. i.e. expose the external foundation and use paint it with bitumen since i suspect that there is more of horizontal capillarity that become vertical hence the adoption of the method. The area has to an extent clay properties hence the trapping of side water that later vertically moves up the wall, will try it and watch what happens.
Yes, DPC was to be done during construction, it is not advisable after construction. You can adopt other water proofing methods, Consult water proofing expert, he may inject water proofing compound/ agent liquid with high pressure injection pump by making some holes in the wall. The liquid spreads over, dries and fills the capillaries that arrests water rising up.
