I might suggest to begin with a basic approach. Try to learn WSN with Xbee devices. They are really easy to configure and the learning curve is not steep. I would suggest to try learning Xbee and Arduino. There is a lot of information on Digi International's website(Xbee manufacturer) and a good book to understand the use of these devices:

It depends on the area in WSN u want to specialize in. Because the knowledge area is broad.
