I think that it will be a source of inspiration for new algorithms since in AI we try usually to reproduce human thinking approach.
The next step to achieving that would be to figure out an algorithm that is capable of Long-term-memory. As neural networks are amazing at modelling short sequences and dependencies, although, as an example; they would not be able to figure out if they have read something before. Therefore, conscious development could be somewhat created by Long-term-memory especially with reinforcement learning.
