The first author does not have to be the corresponding author. Besides, I have seen Journals (Elsevier) with more than one corresponding authors. The Ph.D. student can and should be the first author for their publications after all, like Dean Whitehead said, its their data and their project. However, he does not have to be the corresponding author if he does not have sufficient time, intelligence, humility, articulation and facilities to handle correspondence. Another, could be appointed in his stead, but if he has to be, even with some deficiencies, a second corresponding author could be appointed by the research or publication crew.

Maurice - I agree. Students do not have to be corresponding authors - but that has to be negotiated by all parties. It should not be a decision made without the consent of the PhD student - nor the non-correspondence role imposed upon them.

In my experience, different countries and schools value the role of the corresponding author differently, compared to first the role of first author. Find out what the policy at YOUR school is.

The first author normally has the greatest contribution to the research in terms of conceptualisation, data generation/experimentation (or otherwise), analysis etc. Usually the first author is the corresponding author. However, in the case of PhD students, their institutional emails are sometimes temporary (maybe 3 years or less depending on time of submission of paper), or may not look very professional - e.g. student number emails. In such cases, it is convenient to have the supervisor as the corresponding author for handling future inquiries. All the same, the student should be the first author whenever the paper reports on their direct research.

There has been a tradition in the past of having the supervisor be the corresponding author as their address and contact details are more likely to remain stable over time, but if the PhD student has a stable email address, there is no reason that they can't be the corresponding author for their own papers. corresponding author is the one to whom all the correspondences (queries, revisions, etc) are sent. The corresponding author can be at any order. The first author may be a corresponding author. The first author is the main fellow in the research paper.

I think most universities have some sort of training classes for graduate students in terms of publication ethics. Normally, the student or postdoc or whoever contributed the most to a project is the first author. In addition, some researchers assign importance to the role of corresponding author but this view is not necessarily shared by journals. The corresponding author should be selected for their ability to help coordinate the review and revision process. This reflects the fact that journals view the role of a corresponding author largely as an administrative one.

The first author is the author who do and achieve the most work in the research such as idea and calculations and the second author gives any support. In the PhD studies the situation is different but still the student be the first author but the supervisor is a guide and from the moral rules the supervisor be the corresponding author. This is what I think about it.

Amir Ghaderi Since I have undergone this practice only recently, I would like to comment. I worked on my research paper, my advisor kept on guiding me. I was the first author and my Research Advisor, @Dr Sham Haidar was the corresponding author. He asked my choice. I was short of time so requested my Advisor to be the corresponding ahthor. He had more experience in publication than me. I had more confidence in his experience of handling unexpected situations. So we worked in a team. Moreover, Ph D Program of studies require the researcher to be the first author. In my second publication, I shall be the corresponding author as well, In Shaa Allah.
