You can look at security, mining trends, or hate speech on social media, prediction, and detection, etc.
You may want to look at ontologies with statistical approaches leading to stochastic ontologies that might work similar as the human brain.

First of all, those are three somehow different areas. In the field of Deep Learning and Convolutional Neural Networks there are new improvements in the research open by Ian Godfellow about GANs. I think it is possible to find some applications and research in GAN. Other problemas that I have come across are for instance: create accurate 3D mesh models of human head based on a 2D photograph. Machine Learning is a huge field. You need to first determine your area of interest. For example: NLP, computer vision, Robotics, Predictive Analysis etc.
And then search for subdomains e.g. in computer vision we have Object detection, Object Localization, Image segmentation, etc.
