What is one of the more promising educational innovations of which you are aware, why is it valuable, and what, if anything, have you done to adopt it?
Text is no longer the primary means of learning transfer. Character-based simulation, in which animated characters provide a social context that motivates learners, can improve cognition and recall and bodes well for high-impact e-learning.
PS: To facilitate uptake and promote outreach, I developed a dozen or so 5-minute long animations in which a cast of animated characters summarize complex (knowledge) management articles.
The flash animations my initial post referred to—numbering 10 to be exact—are among the earliest material available at https://vimeo.com/knowledgesolutions. Article Learning in a Flash
is an article on the subject of character-based animations for learning.
Wide availability of MOOCS is an important innovation. Many of these are available for free on SWAYAM platform of the regulatory body on a wide variety of subjects. It promotes self-paced learning leading to greater student engagement and learning.
E-Learning is one of the more promising educational innovations of which I am aware. I see it as a promising alternative to traditional forms of learning. E-learning allows us to reach a broader audience than that allowed by traditionaal forms of learning. This aspect notwithstanding, E-learning may have, say, its dark side. This is so because there is no substitute for teachers' presence at classerooms. The active methods are also a promising educational innovation. Contrary to what happens in the tradidional methods of learning, in the active methods teachers are more mentors and organizers of learning experiences and situations than mere transmitters of ready made and established truths imposed on students from outside. In other words, the active methods' main aim is that the student understands, reinvents, and reconstruct all that s/he learns. The traditional methods of learning appeal more to rote learning than to a true understanding. We can say that the active methods intend to give rise to innovative and creative students, not to conformist people, as is the case of the traditional methods of teaching/learning.
Focus on the subject matter over and above being concerned with teaching methods and convey your interest in the subject matter. Real interest - not fake enthusiasm. Look inside yourself - do you love the subject matter? Or do you need a teaching method to compensate for the fact that you have nothing to offer?
