Worm gear is specifically used to transmit power and also to convert rotary motion to linear motion. A bevel gear is used to transmit power between two non-intersecting and mostly perpendicular shafts. Use of bevel gear can be seen in the differential of an automobile.Worm gear is used to obtain high reduction in speeds.
i would like to correct the above post. Worm gear converts a rotary motion only to a ROTARY motion. Worm gears are used to transmit power between non-intersecting shafts (they can be perpendicular) where high gear reductions are required.
Bevel Gears are used between INTERSECTING shafts (mostly perpendicular).
In case worm worm wheel drive the driver is the threaded shaft and driven is the worm wheel. the axes of driver and driven are non intersecting. The driver and driven rotate in perpendicular planes.
In case of bevel gear teeth are cut on conical surface. Driver and driven axes are intersecting. The plane of rotation of driver and driven will be perpendicular if cone angles are 90 degree. Worm gear drives are used for very high velocity ratios.
Worm Gear :- A device consisting of a threaded shaft (worm) that mates with a gearwheel (worm wheel) so that rotary motion can be transferred between two shafts at right angles to each other
Bevel Gear:- A gear having teeth cut into a conical surface known as the pitch zone. Two such gears mesh together to transmit power between two shafts at an angle to each other
Have a look over this image to get a clear idea about the difference..
It is clear from the image that, spur gear have parallel shafts non-intersecting, bevel gear have intersecting shafts (if the axis of shafts are extended), and worm gear have non-intersecting shafts (in most cases the axes if extended make an angle of 90 degree).
