Competency based curriculum is a curriculum that emphasizes what the learners are expected to do rather than mainly focusing on what they are expected to know.
In principle, such a curriculum is learner-centred and adaptive to the changing needs of students, teachers and society.
CBC is more of knowledge and skills through creativity, innovation and problem solving while 8-4-4 is more of content memorization and reproduction during examination.
A competency based curriculum is a curriculum designed around a set of key competencies that can be both cross curricular or subject bound.
It is based on learner-centred methodologies and it is very adaptive to the changing needs of students, teachers and society as well. The curriculum allows students to get the support they need individually.
Students learning activities and environments are chosen so that learners can acquire and apply the knowledge and skills to situations they encounter in everyday life.
In my opinion it is a very powerful, flexible and different from a traditional subject curriculum, because it allows students to work at their own pace. They can advance very quickly or as slow as they need it to be, in order to master a skill or a competency that is required of them, regardless of environment.
It is a wonderful method to meet different learning abilities, resulting this way in a better learning outcomes in the end.
Competency-based learning is oriented towards what students can do with the information they are acquiring, rather than just getting knowlegde or following a standardized curriculum. Through different disciplines students are expected to develop competencies which will be useful for them during their lifetime.
Also, all in all, competence based curriculum uses the knowledge and skills tht students have to apply them in creating or solving a problem or a situation, whilst the 8-4-4 is concentrating in simply memorising and reproducing the knowledge you have only through exams usually.
Curriculum that focuses on the competency level of the learners ie. learning journey begins with no knowledge - basic - intermediate - advanced and finally the expert level.
Competency based curriculum is expecting your learner's learning mastery skills based on the set competencies (that are developmentally appropriate ) per level.
