Hi all,
I want to put a microphone behind a carbon fiber housing. The housing is needed to shield unwanted electromagnetic radiation of a complex electronic system. The microphone has a typical directivity and should be used to measure typical frequency spectrum of human speech.
I will design a slit in the housing to allow acoustic waves to reach the microphone. In addition I have put a waterproof membrane to minimize any moisture to enter the structur.
What should be taken into account regarding influence of carbon fiber and membrane to resulting directivit?

Assuming that the penetration of the carbon fiber structure can be neglected as compared to the slit covered by the membrane, that the length of the slit isn't much shorter than the wavelength in the spectrum of interest, and applying Huygens–Fresnel principle, my guess is that the directivity in the plane defined by the endpoints of the slit and the microphone is only slightly deteriorated while in the plane perpendicular to the first one (and to the axis of the slit) there is hardly any directivity left.
