Greetings, the typical requirement of microstrip patch antenna for the stated application is to have focused beam. Hence, there is need to work on enhancing the Gain performance of antennas. Conventional microstrip patch designed using FR4 is not a candidate for improved gain, so better option will be to work on low loss materials / multi layered stacking structures / usage of metamaterials / arrays could help achieve the desired objective. Especially when designing antennas for defense applications, focus should also be given on the nulls and side lobe levels to minimize interference to get devoid of false target indication. My suggestion would be to refer antenna book by prof. K.D. Prasad, where prof. introduction on terms likes binomial distribution, chebyshev distribution and so on for deciding the level of side lobe levels and main lobe width would definitely help you with the desired objective.
