I have designed a slotted patch antenna. In this design, I used a circle shaped slot on this patch. Now, if I change the size or area (increase or decrease radius or diameter of slots) on the patch, what are the impact of surface current due to changes the slot shape/area? Any impact on reflection coefficient, gain, or radiation directivity?
I expect that as the circular hole is bigger, the resonant frequency of the patch will drop. There will also be a higher frequency resonance caused by the hole, which will fall in frequency as the hole gets bigger.
I expect the impedance of the patch will increase as the hole gets bigger. If the hole is too big, radiation from the hole (inside edges) will interfere with radiation from the patch (outside edges).
The impedance will increase because the current will need to flow around the hole, with a higher current density, so the effective inductance will increase. There will also be a small decrease in capacitance, but the change in inductance should dominate to begin with.

In case of reducing the effective patch area (the higher accumulated current place) this lead to shift the antenna resonant frequency and a missmatching on the required resonant frequency will be appears.
Otherwise the antenna bandwidth maybe increased.
