Suitable conditions for Marigold plant:

Sunlight: Marigolds can grow in full sun to partial-shade, but it is preferable to plant them in sunny locations as shading may have an adverse effect on flowering.

Soil: Marigolds grow best in moist, well-drained and fertile soil.

Nutrients: A complete fertilizer with a nitrogen count of 100 to 150 parts per million with a balance of nitrogen and potassium, such as a 15-15-15, provides the best nutrient value for marigolds.

Take Care: Allow the soil to dry out between watering, then water thoroughly. Water marigolds at the base of the plant. Avoid a profusion of foliage and fewer flowers by not fertilizing soil after sowing seeds.

Watered: Established marigolds in garden beds need a good soak once each week. Give them enough water so that the soil is moist to a depth of 6 to 8 inches. If the weather is unusually hot or windy, they'll need extra water. Water marigolds in pots when the top 1 to 2 inches of soil is dry.

Trim: Cut off spent flowers, removing the flower and stem back to a set of leaves or junction with another stem. Checking the marigolds every five to seven days and removing spent blooms will limit the energy the marigold spends producing seeds and encourage further flowering and more leaves.

Pinch: Pinch back seedlings after they are 6 to 8 inches tall but before they begin forming flower buds. Pinch the stem within 1/4 inch of the second set of leaves from the top of each vertical stem. Marigolds branch at the pinch point, which results in a fuller plant and more flower buds.

Plants last: Marigolds are annuals, which means they germinate and die all in one growing season. Generally, their maximum lifespan is less than a year, considering that they are usually started indoors in midwinter and die with the first frost.

Flower last: Marigolds usually bloom 45 to 50 days after sowing and continue to bloom until frost.

Over-Watering: You do not need to water marigolds regularly unless the weather is unusually dry. Too much water will lead to soils becoming waterlogged, which can encourage root rot and the development of fungal infections.
