The quality of scientific research is often based on peer reviewing. Scientific journals are one of the most common way for the quality to be established. Often the more well known and rigorous peer reviewed journals are used to establish one's quality of research as better than those of lesser known journals. This of course is not always true. Sometimes it's the research that stands the test of time and years of debate that yields some of the best research put forth within the scientific community.

I think Lemons is right. Peer reviewing plays a very important role in quality scientific research. Some Journals send the papers to those reviewers which are not well versed with work mentioned in the paper. So there are chances of reduction in scientific quality. Some open access journals also reducing the scientific quality. There must be check on that.

In my opinion, the best standards for qualifying research is peer reviewing. I am not sure that some open access journals reduce the scientific quality. Indeed, all scientific journals work to upgrade their impact factor. In the context, they do their best to upgrade also the quality of accepted papers.

Your work should be novel

Otherwise it should fill the gap in published articles in that area.

The researcher should be dedicated and hard working mentality

Researcher should think the problems in different angles

Reasoning for a phenomena or trends in results should be supported with multiple reasons

Researcher should have the mentality to accept others works and reasons

The quality of scientific research is different from the quality of the results of the scientific research. The quality of an article can be ensured by the peer review process, but the actual quality of the research process is a different thing. If we think in terms of quality assurance, the standards for scientific research must cover 2 areas: the process of research and the process of publishing the results of the research.

The standards for research are dependent of the stakeholders of that research process (e.g. in pharma research the procedural standards are very detailed because of the effects on humans, in biotech research because of the effects on life and animals). The standards for the research process are often discussed implicitly as methodological or ethical restrictions. The standards for publishing are typical for each type of publication and each level of recognized scientific value (e.g. ISI indexed publications imposed a relatively common set of standards for authors)

In addition, the implementation of a proper experimental design, where required, is an important factor for a high quality scientific research.

What are the indications of a good quality research?

Certainly, a publication in a good journal counts, as well as a decent peers’ review.

There is one indicator which is usually difficult to identify by newcomers in every particular field - as to whether key players in the field refer to this research (in a positive sense), and how many of them. It is an important aspect in differentiating a good quality research.

Another indicator which requires some familiarity with this research domain is based on the following. Usually, there are several scientific schools in many hotly studied scientific fields that represent competing ideas, and everything around it. If a good quality research gets a positive, polite, and encouraging reaction from the competing scientific school representatives at the conferences, meetings, etc. – it is an indication of a very good quality research. Moreover, if the authors from the competing schools use and/or repeat your results, and discuss them in their following works as confirmed ones – it is an indication of an excellent quality results.

Quality research - when honest  results are reported by honest researcher, reported not because he/she needs one more paper in his/her list of papers, but because results are really interesting. 

Today journals are polluted by meaningless papers - too much emphasis on number of published papers, not on their quality. It looks like 90% of publications are worthless now. Some journals are garbage collectors, not much more.

Frequently mentioned standards for assessing the quality of research include

the following:

• Pose a significant, important question that can be investigated empirically and that contributes to the knowledge base

• Test questions that are linked to relevant theory

• Apply methods that best address the research questions of interest

• Base research on clear chains of inferential reasoning supported and justified by a complete coverage of the relevant literature

• Provide the necessary information to reproduce or replicate the study

• Ensure the study design, methods, and procedures are sufficiently transparent and ensure an independent, balanced, and objective approach to the research

• Provide sufficient description of the sample, the intervention, and any comparison groups

• Use appropriate and reliable conceptualization and measurement of variables

• Evaluate alternative explanations for any findings

• Assess the possible impact of systematic bias

• Submit research to a peer-review process

• Adhere to quality standards for reporting (i.e., clear, cogent, complete)

Authors have asserted that standards for quality research should be premised upon the principles of scientific inquiry (i.e., empirical observations using systematic designs), the theoretical underpinnings and philosophy of science (both positivist and post-positivist), and a consensus of a community of scholars. While space limitations prevent a description of these premises, the role of consensus can be discussed in brief. Consensus among a community of scholars is one of the most respected means of quality assessment. Strategies for reaching consensus include position statements, conferences, the peer review process, and systematic review.

In terms of navigating towards quality, we've traditionally looked at the number of published articles and how many people read the articles, but that is just the beginning. In an effort to search for truth and authenticity not only in the published material but also in the Researcher with regard to bias.

The logical if then therefore bases for the argument and efforts should be prevalently clear, concise and to the point. I prefer to start with a balanced Algebraic equation that includes all the relative factors or variables that give me my expected result. I like to also add a balanced symmetrical conceptual theoretical framework to present dichotomy including different points of views and various concepts stemming from a historical context. Including a bio of my own background for distilling bias about myself to the reader.

One should never fear that their work will be stolen, as due to their ultimate effort in helping to benefit the masses. Letting our research be disseminated freely without any expectation of wealth or fame would then be aligned with the merit of pure intention.

Also, in my opinion, the quality of the involved person plays its role.

A better quality is supported by a better used methodology, for example, an objective methodology is always preferable to a subjective methodology.
