Fisheries resource supplies adequate cheap balanced nutrition to the rural / coastal people. These resources are heavily exploited. New innovations are needed to sustainably exploit these resources. From singly species conservation mangers are moving towards multi-species/ ecosystem based management. World bodies are recommending to manage these dwindling resources by Eco-friendly way and give much emphasis to implement sustainable development goals. Recently, LME and MPA area concepts are evolving. Any innovation in this line shall help to understand and evolve appropriate management principles for the tropical multi-spiecies fisheries resource management.

eDNA analysis is one innovation, or environmental DNA, all the tiny traces of genetic material that are left behind as living things pass through water or soil :)
I can think of several new opportunities for taking a fresh look at fisheries management in the broad sense - several are not entirely new, but it'll be good to make some more progress in using new sources of information and pushing for implementation of the principles to gather more experience what works best under different real life conditions:
- the improvement of estimates of what humans take our of the sea including methods to differentiate industrial, often overlooked yet important small-scale or artisanal (commercial) fisheries, subsistence and recreational fisheries that give a more realistic picture of what needs management than often aggregate national statistics - that's the work of an independent international research initiative www.seaaroundus.org
- as fishing is a social activity it's important not only to look at the catch and the landings, but also at the people involved in production and trade - trade in particular is a powerful driver - and forms of co-management have been shown to provide better results for people and the environment;
- unfortunately, a significant share of the imports into the major markets - China, Japan, North America, European Union - are based on IUU fishing, some controlled by international rackets or what Interpol calls international organised crime. That means that effective management needs to seek a lot more cooperation and coordination with a range of other services within a country (port authorities, coast guard, customs, fiscal administration, police, ...) and also at least equivalent agencies or administrations in neighbouring countries to seek developing countermeasures and not become a victim of unscrupulous operators. Interpol helps governments to raise awareness and increase preparedness.
- Global Fishing News works already with a number of countries providing information about their tracking of fishing operations to help separate legitimate operators from criminal ones and ultimately protect resources from overexploitation and countries from massive, also financial, losses.
- The interdisciplinary notion of the ecosystem approach to fisheries is worth recalling: Five key messages of the EAF approach are considered central:
- maintain ecosystem integrety (no fish is an island)
- precautionary approach to fisheries and other use of marine and coastal ecosystems and respecting the rules
- broad stakeholder participation
- promoting sectoral integration and safeguarding livelihoods
- investing in research and knowledge

I agree with Andrew Paul McKenzie Pegman. eDNA technique in fisheries management is capable of facilitating non-invasive, economical and rapid monitoring of fish stocks. It has potential to identify and give a better estimate of species diversity by capturing DNA of fishes from their habitat. Those species can also be identified which may be under-represented by conventional surveys.
