The first thing that strikes me is that rural areas seem to be slanted toward production and urban areas slanted toward consumption: meth labs in rural area, makeshift distilleries in the Appelachian hills, pot farms in the forests etc. Its much harder to hide a meth lab in cities...the smell, fumes, increased law enforcement, lack of privacy etc. Also there is less opportunity for employment in rural areas...that's why poor farmers in Afghanistan grow poppies and marijuana. In many cases a whole rural community is involved in the production of these drugs and it becomes normalized.

What about area it self and the community setting ? I try to explore much more why criminal choose some rural area to do so.

Well, access to the ingredients is key. Farmers store annhydrous ammonia in large tanks in their fields usually without much security and easily stolen. Another aspect is that many of these rural areas are isolated from the rest of the world. This creates a detachment where folks dont seem as tethered to mainstream laws of the state but instead refer to local or tribal type of governance. In cities you are constantly reminded of who is in charge (the state) with the exception of inner city ghettos which are in their own right isolated from the rest of society. I cant seem to get over the commercial root of meth production though. In a world where everything is increasingly commodified all motives seem to rest on material relations. As far as impacts go, you see the same impacts as in other industry in rural areas: there is pollution, health problems as the meth production creates a rural 'ground zero' of consumption, you have fewer resources to resolve the problems, and with less contact with the outside world more children grow up to repeat the mistakes of their parents. But for the most part I see it as folks trying to get by...and often becoming addicted themselves. As to why criminals choose to cook meth in rural areas: the main reason is to not get caught...when you have a lab that is spewing toxic gases and could explode at any moment...you want to do it away from witnesses or to limit who might get hurt if a fire breaks out.

Understand....mean that lack of control either formal or informal in rural area as a motive to do , isn't it ?
