I agree that security is a key field for future research on IoT. Recently, one very popular topic of research that joins together IoT, security and machine learning is detection of anomalies (malicious or technical) from network traffic. In the past anomaly detection was more restricted to malware, and used mostly signature-based and behavior-based methods. Currently, machine-learning methos have taken over the state of the art and are not restricted to malware or malicious attacks, but can detect operational problems and other physical failures of the system. It is not restricted to IoT, but as many network topics, IoT scalated existing problems with sheer numbers and network heterogeneity.
