New journals have sprung up and we now have a wider range of outlets that serve as vehicles for our studies. However, how do we choose what journal to publish in? Fast publication? Rigorous unbias peer-review? Rejection/acceptance rate? Other suggestions?
like the above comment but still have different aspects from this. IF is really a factor to count in, no matter how big or small it is.
IF Journals ....may be, but due to high rejection rate and totally biased peer review system a lot of people today prefer Open Access Journals. Rapid Publication is one of the biggest factor in today's era of Patents. And yeah if calculated unbiased Open access Journals would have much more impact factor due to unrestricted access.
I think IF is a good indicator, but so is relative rank within a subcategory (i.e. some journals may have low impact factor but are #1 in their subject area). A good free way to view journal rankings (doesn't carry same weight as Thomson IFs) is SJR (http://www.scimagojr.com/journalrank.php/). Open access can be good, but of course you have to be able to pay which also limits the types of manuscripts submitted [unless there is a fee waiver for individuals who cannot pay]

@Joseph, what if Ȋ̝̊̅ published in a journal with high IF last year, and in this year,it loses its IF? Did you hear about gaming of IF by some journals?
@ Mackey, IF is awarded by ISI-Thompson and Scimago. Which of these do we consider? What if the journal gains IF in a year and loses it the next year?
a good journal main depends on the editor, the reviewers and rigourous, constructive and fair review process. If these are ok then it does not matter if the journal is open access or published in a more traditonal way. The process should enhance the quality of a paper, so in the end the author(s) should see the benefit of the process and be not frustrated of it, even when it leads that a paper is declined. It seems that even well established publishers are becoming more lax, possibly because of the high competion in the field, and this usually leads to a deterioration of the review process.
In my own opinion, good journal must have must be peer reviewed with credible and qualified reviewers and editors/ editorial board leading to quality research publications.
