There is political sociology, but of higher education, not sure. What I do know is that you can do an higher education research within political sociology.

I do believe that there is a lot of political sociology in higher education based on the fact that education can have an influence on political and social systems.

There is a great deal of material of a historic nature on various political systems' educational structures/systems. There are a number of theories, related to this. Various political entities often emplace new educational systems, whereas others maintain, or even 'resurrect' older systems, in attempts to present higher credibility. An example might be Japan- which during the pre-Meiji eras had intensive competition, then eased somewhat between the Meiji and the early 1900's, then resumed its intense competitiveness leading up to WWII and to the present. Within the former world-empirical systems of both Britain and France, old colonies are still using forms of their school systems. These two school systems differ, because the cultures they came from differ. Regardless of differences, however, most of these systems tend to be somewhat ethnocentric, claiming 'their' system is 'the best'.
