For a low speed wind (say, 2-4m/s), I am trying design a wind turbine of low cost generating at least 0.1 - 0.5kw of power. Can I get some literature about VAWT and its design? Since this idea can solve power generation problems for domestic use, can anybody give any other insight into it?

I am no expert compared to other people in research gate. But the implementation of VAWT even failed commercially and i don't think you can do anything better to it at your level. You will get all the theoretical results like they all did and when it is actually designed and implemented it will fail. On the other hand, floating wind turbines are proving to be very effective and a lot of research is going on in the area. if you need i can give you contacts of people who are actually working in that area. try designing a floating VAWT and try SAROD 2011 proceedings there were a couple of papers published in that area and i guess a professor in IIT kanpur is working in this area i am not very sure of it though. This is just my opinion i may be 100% wrong. correct me if i am.

In wind energy system, the most important is the energy in the wind "stream" that you are to extract. Once you know how much you want to extract - the available power is proportional to the cube pf V (V X V x V), Then only you work out the other parameters.
The next most important is the cross section area of the stream. The other important parameter is, the present technologies available, would only extract a max of 0.59 of that power. For a VAWT, the value is around 0.4 (yes only 40% - this the best figures, most systems gives less). You will reaiise that the efficiency depends on all other aspects of the turbine - aerofoil, diameter, number of blades etc, etc. These are where, a design differ from other design.

See Darshan, I would suggest that the VAWT consist of a number of aerofoils which turn arond because of the lift generated. The resultant torque created due to the torques due to the lift force in each aerofoil is responsible for the rotation of the VAWT. Now at low wind speeds the design must probably contain high lift aerofoils ( search for this) so that we may use it for the required purpose.

Looking at all the answers, I think many are pointing towards highly sophisticated systems. Looking back at your question, I think you just want a simple system to produce enough energy for your own domestic use. To cut the chase short, why not just use the famous Savonius type of vertical axis turbine?? I think you could construct this easily.Just bear inmind what Roy Sukantha said above.
