I think it depends very much on the field of application. When I think of micro or ultra-precisions cutting processes a radical soluation was to get rid of all extra fluids and to carry it out dry. However often MQL (mimimum quantity cooling lubrication) is applied and non-reactive oils are used. Here a major factor is the atomization meanign the fuild-droppled size and their velocity distribution within the spray. I remember also of applications of nanolubricants in this field.

It depends on situation on what tribology properties of nanolubricant being assessed - properties such as tool wear, surface roughness, ease or machining/grinding with or without the aid of surfactant Be specific to get the positive comment. If you have any problem with lubricant containing nanoparticle and surfactant, then spell out.
Purpose and selection of the surfactant is to have a good viscosity and dispersion of the nanoparticles of oxide materials such as - TiO2, Al2O3, CeO2, ZnO and so on. Hope this answer your query.
