Early career hydrologists can benefit from the advice of others who are more advanced in their careers. In the attached document, we give an overview of solicited short answers from established hydrologists to (one or more of) the following questions:

We thank all hydrologists that have been so generous to share their knowledge, and took the effort to respond. The advice here reflects a diversity of philosophies that have led to wide variety of careers.

Few will identify and want to commit to a single topic or problem. The exception might be if a well funded program is already developed and has your devoted interest and program support To you.
Writing/presentations - to some extent, practice makes perfect, or at least promotes improvement. Some are especially talented, and for some its always going to be a struggle.
A well rounded education in hydrology, meteorology, geology, soils, forestry, agriculture, water quality, water and sediment measurement, recognizing field indicators are all helpful. Having an inquisitive mind, attitude, always be reading to learn and take time to help others when you can.
An avoidable mistake may be failing to recognize the politics associated with some findings, and being careful in qualifying findings so application and adjustment can be realized.
water is life. thus no single approach to water is possible you will find you self addressing more than one problem. for instance you cant talk of water use without lokking at water sources, or water scarcity woithout looking at water catchment areas. a holistic reading is good for understanding hydological problems including gender relations in water
