I am trying to use the PlanetLab source available in the CloudSim. I understand that the folder “20110303” contains all the samples of VMs utilization taken on March 3rd 2011. There are 1052 VMs in the folder. For every VM, total 288 readings have been taken.
My query is, what about the hosts? To which host all these VM belong?
I worked on PlanetLab infrastructure in the past so I recognized the format of the file names, which embeds the host name and other information. For a file name like this:
aladdin_planetlab_extranet_uni-passau_de_tsinghua_xyz
The physical host will be aladdin.planetlab.extranet.uni-passau.de while the name of the slice/VM owner in planetlab is tsinghua and the name of the slice xyz.
I saw some files like this:
146-179_surfsnel_dsl_internl_net_root
The node would be 146-179.surfsnel.dsl.internl.net and the VM is a special control root VM.
The PlanetLab model is that there are a number of organizations that can own a slice. A slice is defined as a set of VMs across the PlanetLab's distributed infrastructure. You can read more about PlanetLab's model at the link I have included.

Thanks for your reply. In fact, I was also forced to think in the same direction, when I looked at the file name conventions carefully. But, I was looking for an authenticate source of information, as my entire work is based on this assumption. I have been referring various sources of information which clearly states this, but could not find one. You may share a one, if you have more idea on this, please.
Hiren, you should be able to get some more authoritative information to verify the hosts if you get a PlanetLab account and access to the slice tools and listing, but you can only do that if your college is a member of PlanetLab. I think, though, that the file name conventions should be pretty accurate for host names. You might also ask someone currently maintaining PlanetLab. There is a generic e-mail for questions - [email protected]. Andy Bavier appears to be still associated with the project.
