There are countable studies done in the light of Sociology of Professions. Unfortunately Librarians either don't give importance to these works / research Works or they willingly and knowingly ignore such works. But they continue to be ignorant on this crucial topic so relevant to them and the LIS profession.

Before it is too late let Librarians (including me) should resolve to understand the process of emergence of a profession in society. It is time Librarians should accept the reality of their and professions status .... whether it is low or medium or high. Let us commit to read research works in this regard and form realistic opinion and view on this topic of "Status of Librarians and Librarianship in society". Let us stop being critical about negative research results. Instead let us initiate positive steps which facilitate the enhancement of our status and position in society.
I agree with you, i believe most librarians (esp in my country Nigeria) do not fully grasp and understand their profession thereby projecting Librarianship poorly .A lot of us grew up without hearing of such profession so imagine the shock i had when i realized that "staying in the library(as i believed it was all librarians do)" was a full time occupation for someone.
I became a librarian by a stroke of luck and have spent my adult life defending my profession amongst my peers in other fields.I believe librarians need to change their attitude to librarianship if we are to convince people to take us serious.We need to adjust our responsibilities especially in this tech evolving age to meet the literacy needs of people outside a classroom.
