I have just heard about the concept of IR Sub-Internships as a means to provide medical students a real hands-on exposure to what IR workflow is really like. Just like Sub-I experiences in other fields, students on IR Sub-Is have roughly the same patient care responsibilities as residents on the IR service. This is such a great idea to address the potential problem we face in students not quite understanding IR given its high degree of subspecialization and its absence from the required medical student curriculum.
Many times when students participate in unstructured IR electives, they're just passive observers on service. They don't get a real sense for the work involved or the patient management skills required. The IR Sub-I experience seems to provide them with a much more realistic exposure to the field.
Are your IR sections providing this experience for medical students?
