I do not know general studies about your question, only some specific ones, but I guess that it is very possible that there are studies about this topic around the creation of 'nations' in Central and South America after the emancipation from Spanish control in XIXth century. Among the specific cases which I know I could highlight the festival of 'Inti Raymi' at Peru, based on Inka traditions, celebrated at Cusco and other places (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inti_Raymi). In my point of view the example of South Africa could be very interesting for you in particular with regard to nation building. For me the following book was a good starting point:

Alon Confino's book "The Nation as a local metaphor" and his articles "Germany as a Culture of Remembrance. Promises and Limits of Writing History" might be interesting for you. In German Andreas Dörner "Politischer Mythos und symbolische Politik. Der Hermann-Mythos: zur Entstehung des Nationalbewusstseins der Deutschen" (1996). There is certainly more literature on other countries and regions available.
