In my research for the Likert scales, the participants provided their responds on a five-point:
The scale is
SD = Strongly Disagree
D = Disagree
N = Neither agree nor disagree
A = Agree
SA = Strongly Agree
with negatively worded items, the scores were reversed” (Dornyei, 2003, p.37) before analysis with SPSS software.
But could we possibly assign "0" instead of "3" for "Neither agree nor disagree" in a research? Please elaborate.
Paul: If the scale is 0 to 5, then you should assign a 3 for "Neither agree nor disagree".

Assigning 0 in the center can be problematic for respondents. It is recommended that in Likert Scale the reponse set should be in a sequence on a linear scale, so I would not suggest using 0 in the center.

Can we add 0 in 5 point likert scales?
when measuring the satisfaction of family friendly policy using likert 5 point scale, we add another point before 1, it's 0 which mean the policy doesnt apply, is that model could still be analyzed? maybe with spss?

Assuming that you’re analyzing your Likert scale data as ordinal (e.g., ordered from, for example, 1 for “strongly disagree” to 5 for “strongly agree”), then you would probably not want to treat your responses of 0, as an actual number 0 in your analyses. That’s because you would be saying that an answer of “does not apply” is even more strongly disagreeing than "strongly disagree" (or the opposite, depending on how you assigned numbers). Probably the most sensible analysis is to treat your 0 as missing data and describe your results as about participants for whom the policy was applicable. There are several ways to do this in SPSS. Probably the most simple is to go into the “variable view” click the cell and ellipsis in the “missing” column and enter that 0 is a discrete missing value. Another possibility is to select/exclude cases and only run your analysis on participants with 1 to 5 as their answer. A third possibility is to choose “transform” from the menu bar and “recode into same/different variable” and keep 1 to 5 the same but define 0 as missing data. Exactly which way you choose won’t matter for this analysis, but it may impact if how you can distinguish “not applicable” responses from any genuinely missing responses. As Kevin stated, in 5-point Likert scale, 1 usually means strongly disagree, 2 means disagree, 3 means not sure, 4 means agree, and 5 means strongly agree. In this case 0 means does not apply. You can still use it if you think that you might get such an answer.

If it is a 1 to 5 ordinal likert scale,it would be named as 3 which is neutral,neither agree nor disagree not zero
