Academic (and vocational) courses could integrate work experience into the curriculum programmes (in order to improve learning outcomes). At the same time, higher education ought to identify any skill gaps and mismatches in the labour market.

Yes, it is a MUST. Universities have to collaborate with business and industry to include mandatory internships for their students, of course. That is a practice in our HE system.
Yes. The only issue I have with this is when Post-graduate students are compelled to go for internship. Should this be limited to undergraduates alone or extended to postgraduate students?

My answer is also yes; Universities should cooperate with the industry in the solution to concrete problems affecting the society of a given country. However, the curriculum of the students should not respond to the industry needs in a given moment. This not means that the University programs cannot be changed from time to time to reflect the new trends within the industry and research institutions. Universities should graduate students who can be useful for the societies where they live.
Strongly recommend that it should happen. The students who have gone for internship are far more successful in the work life then students who had not visited the industry at the time of study. Many bodies in India like the confederation of Indian industry and various management associations of the corporate world have a industry institution interface cell.
It is certainly an increasing trend in Australia as well. Although it does vary to a certain extent between different academic disciplines and areas of study. If the academic discipline is closely aligned with a vocational area, then linkages, industry support for programs and internships for students is more likely to develop. It is a healthy development that indicates people also learn and develop through practical experiences as they can through studying theoretical concepts.
It requires good dialogue and understanding between sector groups and academic providers. In the academic program I used to run, actively seeking out the views of the sector and understanding what learning opportunities were there for students was essential.

Here at Bournemouth University all of our retail management students undertake a paid placement with leading retail companies and many of them return to work for the same company upon graduation. Not surrisingly this is the main reason why we have 100% graduate employment on the Retail Management degree at Bournemouth University since our first graduates left the University in 1993.
