COD, is a chemical oxygen requirement and measures the amount of oxygen needed to oxidize organic substances in wastewater and is expressed in mg / l. The test includes all the organic materials that can be oxidized, so the BOD value is smaller than the COD value.

COD can only be set within 3 hours when compared to a 5-day BOD. The COD value of wastewater is higher than the BOD value because the compounds can be oxidized chemically and only some can be oxidized biologically. Nitrification deals with the oxygen in nitrite and nitrate that will be produced from oxidation of ammonia present.
